THE CASA VOLUNTEER

VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION: 

A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteer is a well-trained, well-supported citizen volunteer appointed by the Court to ensure that the needs and interests of abused and neglected children are being met.   

REQUIREMENTS OF A CASA VOLUNTEER: 

  • Make a commitment for a minimum of 18 months (1½ years).
  • Be at least 21 years of age.  
  • Be willing to donate a minimum of 10 hours per month.
  • Fill out an application, submit to background checks, and complete an interview.
  • Attend 35 hours of training sessions, including court observation time.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Maintain objectivity and professionalism with all parties in the case.
  • Possess written and verbal skills.
  • Remain involved in the case until it is terminated


RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CASA VOLUNTEER: 

  • To serve as an arm of the Juvenile Court as child advocate.
  • Interview child, parents, foster parents, and other concerned people.
  • Review appropriate records and reports.
  • Work with the attorney/Guardian ad litem representing the best interests of the child.
  • Confer with counselors, teachers, case workers, attorneys, etc.
  • Submit written reports to the Court prior to court hearings.
  • Appear at Court Hearings.
  • Maintain records of findings and document all contacts.
  • Visit the child’s placement, and determine if placement is appropriate.
  • Monitor services to the child.
  • Maintain contact with the program director and submit all documentation.
